Dr William Fowlds spent 5 years in a small animal practice in the UK, but is now co-owner of Amakhala Game Reserve.

Project of the month - Brand new Vets Go Wild - Elective course

This new course was put together as requested by the Liverpool vet school and caters for 5th year vet students. It is a 21 day course that provides field based wildlife veterinary management for students with a passion for wildlife.

The experience will be both adventurous and educational with the main emphasis being on academic training and practical experience.

The practical elements of the course may include game capture, translocation of game to other nearby reserves, the reintroduction of species into these reserves, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, animal husbandry at the Born Free rescue and education centre, predator monitoring and so much more.

The theory aspect of the course may include topics such as food and nutrition, diseases, conservation management practice, conservation medicine, community conversation projects, game capture, veldt management, culling and harvesting of game, how to conduct a game census and more.

The course is based on Amakhala Game Reserve, which is located an hour out of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. You will also spend time on Shamwari Game Reserve and Addo Elephant National Park.

The course is run by Dr William Fowlds who is very well respected and a great inspiration to all students that get to meet him.

The accommodation for the course in based on Amakhala in Woodbury tented camp, which has recently been completed to accommodate our vet groups. It has a great surrounding and the tents are fitted with ensuite facilities and can accommodate up to four people per tent.

7 day tiger shark extension for all

If you have booked a placement with us and want to do something else at the end of your time in South Africa to top the experience even more than why not book a 7 day placement on our Tiger Shark project in Durban.

This is a great opportunity to experience marine conservation and working with a hugely experienced team to research into these amazing creatures and get to dive with the sharks in a cage less environment.

What's been happening on the Wildlife Film Academy course?

Recently there has been a new exciting lecture added to the course on animal communication. Anna Breytenbach, a professional Animal Communicator has been practicing for 9 years in Canada, USA and South Africa, and will spend a full day and evening with the Wildlife Film Academy students.

On the June 09 course of Wildlife Film Academy the students had an amazing sighting with a pack of lions and cheetah. If you would like to read more about this please click here.
