Project of the month
Our featured project this month is our new Tiger Shark project! The project has only been set up recently and we have already had lots of interest from people keen to dive, cage less, with these fascinating creatures as well as assisting with marine research in the local area.

Volunteer projects at the research centre last for three weeks and also offer you the opportunity to experience Durban and the surrounding area. With its beautiful beaches and legendary surf, makes Durban one of Africa’s best destination for surfers, swimmers and body boarders. Durban is also home to Africa’s largest marine park and offers a fantastic variety of cultures, as well as a buzzing nightlife.

The tiger shark is one of the oceans top predators and to get the chance to dive alongside without the safety of a cage is a once in a lifetime experience for even the most fearless of people.

The course was set up by Dr Matt Dicken and Blue Wilderness Dive Expeditions, to research into the movement and behaviour of these extraordinary creatures and is fast becoming one of our most hands on projects.

Here is a testimonial from our UK team coordinator who recently visited the location:

“It really is the most exciting marine apex predator projects in the world and I now feel far more confident in sending students out to this project. I was extremely well looked after by the coordinators, the accommodation is stunning and I will definitely do it again on my next trip.”

INTERESTING FACT

The tiger shark's reputation as an indiscriminate eater that will swallow anything it finds, including garbage, has earned it the nickname "the wastebasket of the sea."

Born Free Challenge 2009
Born Free and WWE have been busy setting up this year’s Born Free Challenge on Shamwari Game Reserve. Born Free Foundation is a UK based charity that work towards the protection and preservation of all kinds of animals from mistreat and misery.

Born Free have two big cat sanctuaries based at Shamwari Game Reserve, where they release these rescued animals to live out the rest of their days in as wild an environment as naturally possible.

The challenge has been formulated to test your endurance whilst raising awareness and funding for Born Free. The challenge is a arduous trek through the entire reserve which takes 4 nights in its entirety and sees participants camping out under the stars in African Bush. The trek is one of the best ways to get up close and personal with the wildlife on the reserve.

Philippa Daykin’s trip to South Africa
"At the beginning of May I had a little jaunt around South Africa and needless to say I had a great time! What follows is a brief little summary of my time there (I say brief, as if I had the time I could easily write pages as each project was that much fun and I experienced so much)."
