Bornwild is a perfect example of Responsible Voluntourism combining exciting and rewarding projects in the heart of Malawi. The bornwild projects cover conservation, community and sports based programmes aimed at uplifting the local area and communities through international aid. A proactive and motivated personality is a must for the Bornwild project. The project itself is ideally suited to dedicated and focused individuals with the mindset to make a difference - This really is your opportunity to help put something back!!

The project is ideally suited to dedicated and focused volunteers who have the mindset to make a difference. The project is split into three main areas and individual volunteers can find their own area of interest where they feel they can best contribute. Support from our onsite coordinators will always be available to guide you through your placement.

The vision of Bornwild is to uplift the local communities and promote sustainable eco tourism in the area. The programme covers three main areas of concern; conservation, community and sports.

The project is split into 3 main areas of concern and individual volunteers will find their own area of interest where they feel they can best contribute. Support from our onsite coordinators will always be available to guide you through your placement. During your time in Malawi you will have the opportunity to get involved in various ongoing projects in and around the area, which may include:

Conservation
The conservation project is made up of long term and short term projects. We cannot guarantee that you will be involved in every project but here is a few of the projects that you may be involved in -

  • Environment rehabilitation
  • ID of game/herds/families
  • Species identification
  • Grazers, bird migration
  • Wetland rehabilitation
  • Erosion control
  • Removal of wire and rubbish
  • Infrastructure maintenance
  • Building and developing of model agricultural plots for training and education within communities
  • Building of basic and cost effective irrigation methods
  • Education on the principles of crop diversification including vegetable production, fruit production, livestock and fish production
  • Introducing the principles of organic farming and perma-culture

Community
Part of the community experience is visit the locals and experience their culture. You also visit the local schools, orphanage and businesses. You will get the chance to teach the people new skills help them build a better life for themselves. The activities can include -

  • Educating in the principles of personal financial responsibility
  • Education in basic concepts of book keeping
  • Assisting in the design of basic business plans

Working along side already established businesses and assisting in improvements such as sales and marketing, stock controls, control systems and other business concepts. Working together with individuals to help them to start and establish their own business.

  • Youth work
  • Basic education
  • Sports coaching
  • Entertainment through theatre, dance and music
  • Teaching visual arts and crafts skills
  • Training of local social workers and volunteers
  • AIDS awareness and life skills training within schools

Sports
The sport is important to get the communities together to learn how to work together to develop in other areas, this also provides the communities with positive and healthy forms of recreation. You may be involved in -

  • Basic sports
  • Basic hand eye coordination
  • Soccer training
  • Netball training
  • Volley ball training
  • As well as general games and sports of your own interest

Each one of these projects gives you the chance to help put something back into the local community and environment and help the overall development of the country.

Location
Malawi, one of the most stunning countries on the continent of Africa, is located in between Tanzania, Zambia and Mozambique and home to the Bornwild Project.

The countries population consists of around 13 million people, and is one of the poorest regions in the world. Around 85% of the population is rural, largely living in fascinating traditional villages.

Accommodation

Bornwild volunteers are accommodated on the stunning Kuti Reserve in converted cottages. The individual cottages consist of 2 bedrooms with communal bathroom and living area and are based on 2 people sharing. You can also stay in A framed cottages which are based on two / three people sharing a room. There is a shower and toilet located nearby.

Time Off
Due to the nature of this project, time off is limited. You will tend to find that evenings and Sunday afternoons can be spent at your own leisure.
