Our award winning action packed Travelling Classroom program is a unique blend of learning Spanish, travelling adventure and volunteer projects. Based in a beautiful country of huge diversity with golden palm fringed beaches, exotic jungles, spectacular and mysterious mountains, ancient indigenous cultures and the beat of exotic Latino!
This gap year project is based at our Caribbean Lodge on one of Venezuela’s best beaches, Playa Colorada in Mochima National Park and you take adventure travel expeditions while learning Spanish.
Situated in one of the most bio diverse countries on the planet – Venezuela. You will be based in Mochima National Park at our Caribbean Lodge on Playa Colorada, and travel across eastern Venezuela ‘expedition style’ kayaking in the Orinoco Delta, hiking in the Gran Sabana encountering wildlife and learning ways of the indigenous peoples living sustainably as they have for generations.
This project is a spirit of adventure, cultural immersion, learning from and giving back to the local community, our hosts!!
The project runs 365 days of the year and there are 6 different course durations, 3, 4, 5, 8, 12 and 24 weeks.

There is a lot of content to our Travelling Classroom program – Spanish language tuition, adventure travel, volunteering – however, the main objective is a quest for personal development. Use this gap year project to discover your inner capabilities and unleash potential, develop self confidence through an experience of trying new things, exploring new places, making connections with different people.
There are seven start dates each year and you can enroll for either 3, 4 & 5 week programs which are the shortest or if you have time on your side there are 8, 12 or 24 week programs. However if you choose to opt for either the 3, 4 or 5 week program and wish to extend your stay you are more than welcome to.
Weeks 1,2 and 3 – Learn Spanish, kayak to remote Caribbean islands, swim in crystal waters, rock climb, abseil down a waterfall, explore mysterious caves and caverns, see the rounded mountains of Caripe and explore the flourishing Guacharo National Park.
Your plane touches down in Barcelona where a Jakera representative will meet you and take you to your new home amid the coconut palm trees of the Playa Colorada. Here you will spend the first two weeks of your adventure learning Spanish, visiting local islands going on kayaking adventure, learning to rock climb and abseil, and immersing yourselves into the local culture and atmosphere with some Salsa and Merengue dancing classes!
Each weekday morning you will fit four hours of intensive Spanish tuition into your daily adventure with lessons designed to teach Spanish in a natural and spontaneous fashion by imitating the way people acquire their mother tongue. The lessons are comprised of four 45 minute sessions with 15 minute breaks and focus on developing students comprehension of the four main language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Outside Spanish lessons’ you will also get the opportunity to practice your adventure sports skills as you embark on a variety of exciting adventure activities.
Weeks 4 and 5 – Explore the Orinoco Delta seeing an abundance of wildlife, kayak to remote Warao settlements, and learn to survive in the jungle like a Warao Indian.
Your fourth and fifth weeks will take you on a spectacular adventure to kayak along the Orinoco River in the Orinoco Delta, an area fringed with beautiful mangroves and freshwater swamp forests. The delta is home to a great variety of species of fantastic scientific and biological importance, you will get sightings of river otters, crab-eating foxes, the rare manatee, and an amazing colorful spectrum of birds that include parrots, toucans and macaws.
You will also get the opportunity to visit the Wararo families and sample their way of life, learning how to cook in clay booking pits and weaving basket trays. Your guides on this unique adventure will also show you how to survive in the jungle with lessons that include how to forage for food, fish in the delta, cook your catch, make shelters to sleep in at night and live in the spectacular scenery the way the Warao’s have for centuries.
Weeks 6, 7 and 8 – Play beach sports, snorkel in crystal waters, enter a volleyball competition, visit historical cities filled with history, go on a Jeep safari to see the magical Tepuis Mountains and trek to the top of Mount Roraima.
Continuing your Spanish course, you will expand your vocabulary, hone your grammar, improve your confidence, and get more and more fluent in the wonderful language every day. By this stage you should be able to have a basic conversation. You will also get a chance to explore the area, snorkel, play sport on the beach and swim in gorgeous warm sea.
We will take a trip to Cumana, a busy maritime city that boasts one of the largest tuna fleets in Venezuela, situated at the mouth of the Manzanares River on the Caribbean Coast. Cumana was the first city to be founded by Europeans on the South American mainland, it possess beautiful colonial style architecture. You will embark on a weeklong Jeep Safari into the mystical highlands of Venezuela to visit indigenous settlements, witness the amazing array of huge waterfalls scattered along our route, and travel through the amazing Tepuis (huge vertical 3000 foot table-like mountains that stand as isolated islands in the Sabana).
Tepuis is known to the local people as ‘House of the Gods’ and are home to the Pemon Indians. This 5-6 day journey will take you past stunning waterfalls, unique rock formations, and through cloud forests until we reach the summit. This will be our home for two nights so we may fully experience the amazing environment with its moon-like appearance and out of this world views.
On your way home you will spend part of the day in Brazil where you will celebrate conquering Mount Roraima with a traditional BBQ type feast, and visit a local town called La Lina where you will get the chance to do some shopping and relax.
Weeks 9, 10, 11 and 12 – Volunteer in the community.
You have mastered the Spanish language, now you will be able to put your skills to the test as you get involved in one of the variety of community projects that take place in the area. Though you will no longer have Spanish classes, every day will be a lesson as you interact with native speakers of Spanish using Spanish as the main language in which you communicate. The community projects which you could get involved in includes: Teaching in the local school, Working in a newly constructed community center for the village (recently completed by volunteers) and Marine Conservation Project.
Weeks 13 to 20 – Volunteer in community projects and work experience.
You will have the opportunity to choose which volunteering project or work experience placement you are most interested in undertaking for the next eight weeks of your Venezuelan adventure. The range of volunteering opportunities will allow you to gain a range of knowledge and plethora of skills, whilst helping vitally required sustainable schemes in extremely poor parts of Venezuela. The projects we may also get involved in include: Helping a foundation for street children, Working at a Zoo / Aquarium and Teaching at a Warao Indian School.
Weeks 21 and 22 – Trek from La Paragua to Canaima, visit isolated villages, sleep in the wilderness, and see Angel Falls.
Week 21 will see you trekking from La Paragua to Canaima, an area so remote that it is not uncommon to see illegal gold dredging in the rivers or spot panther tracks along our route. You will rest at isolated villages along the way, often we are the first foreigners the inhabitants have ever seen. Week 22 will be based in the village of Canaima where you will refresh your Spanish teachings with some more Spanish classes during the day. The Afternoons you can explore the village and surrounding national park. There will be an optional overnight trip to visit Angel Falls (an additional cost of approximately USD 150) and see the spectacular 807 meter uninterrupted drop of water, before concluding your week with a flight back to La Paragua.
Weeks 23 and 24 – Relax at Playa Colorada, play beach sports, and celebrate completing our amazing adventure.
Your final two weeks will be spent at Playa Colorada, where you will be able to relax and soak up the sunshine to fully rejuvenate before your flight home. There will be a further 20 hours of Spanish lessons which will allow you to demonstrate how far your knowledge of the Spanish language has progressed . There will also be some amazing parties to enjoy which will not only allow you to perfect your Salsa techniques, but will provide the opportunity to say farewell to the friends you have made along the way.
