For anyone who watched Safari Vet School recently, the fate of Geza the rhino will have been extremely distressing, as it was for us here at Wildlife Experience.
Geza’s horn was cut off by poachers, his face was mutilated and he was left, suffering terribly until he was found and finally put out of his misery. The full story is heart-breaking.
While this may not be something we particularly want to be presented with on a Friday evening, sadly it is happening and it is getting worse. Just recently, another seven mutilated rhino carcasses were found.
The most positive response to these tragic and incomprehensible events is not to shake our heads and criticise the actions of the perpetrators from the comfort of our armchairs, but to think where we might be able to practically help.
Firstly, you can visit the website set up by the student vets. This can be found at http://teamrhino.co.uk. There are links to a petition and information on how to make a donation.
The other practical help you can give, if you are able, is to consider volunteering on one of the reserves in Africa that are working so hard to conserve wildlife. By choosing to work as a volunteer in Africa you will gain an understanding of how important it is that we do everything we can to look after the amazing wildlife found there.
Rhinos are unique; they need our help, as do the many other animals that are endangered. Working as a volunteer on a conservation programme in Africa will make a difference, believe us.
Let’s respond to the sadness with a promise to do something about it in 2012.
