OBriens fourth and final week at Shamwari Game Reserve
I've
had a really good last week at Shamwari Game Reserve. We went on a night drive
on the Monday and saw lots of interesting nocturnal animals, as well as some cheetah,
which was a bonus. We also worked throughout the week, cleaning water points,
chopping down trees and removing cactus and prickly pears. During the week we
went on a drive around the reserve and saw a black rhino for the first time, as
they are really hard to find, so that was a good way to end my placement. Read

OBriens third week at Shamwari Game Reserve
I
have had another great week here at Shamwari Game Reserve this week. The week
started with us helping to dart the sick lioness, once she had been darted we
had to move her into a crate to be taken back to the veterinary surgery to be
examined. We spent the rest of the day poisoning invasive plants on the reserve. Read

Shamwari
Game Reserve Diary by Jennifer OBrien
I
thought I would send a quick update to let you all know how my first week at Shamwari

lead coordinator. As we were all tired after our flights we didn't do much on
the first day, but got the chance to relax and explore the student house. Read

"I
was about to go to one of the worlds best Game Reserves, Shamwari,
where I would be fortunate enough to spend four weeks. I was gifted with an unforgettable
first day there. At Shamwari, one of our many responsibilities was to monitor
the Black and White Rhino. Throughout the course of the morning we encountered
many animals including, Giraffe, Zebra and Elephant as well as many other species
when, finally, at the top of one of Shamwaris many hills we spotted an adult
White Rhino with her baby. Read

Laura Christie on the Moholoholo Rehabilitation
Centre (Testimonial)
"After
deciding I wanted to get away and do something completely different to what Im
used to, I spent four weeks at Moholoholo Rehab Centre from 16th June 2009. As
soon as I got picked up from the airport by Lynn (student co-ordinator) I felt
relaxed and welcome. All the students that we picked up from town on the journey
back to Moholoholo were lovely, I couldnt have asked for a better group
of people to settle me in." Read

Diary
from Gareth John, Shamwari Game Reserve
Since
I have been here in South Africa I have seen some amazing wildlife and the work
we do is actually quite fun as well, I am actually enjoying cutting down trees
and there is something very satisfying about doing it. We were lucky enough to
experience the relocation of five elephants a couple of weeks ago, which apparently
only happens every other year. Read

Rehabilitation Centre has been busy looking after more animals with a success

Sadly
missed ...
Moholoholo
have sadly lost the last one of their three lions they took on after they were
abandoned by an Egyptian circus. 13 years ago Goldie, Shortie and Blondie arrived
at the centre and have lived there ever since as they were too badly treated before
to fend for themselves.
We
had a busy weekend at the Trust; our hotline was as hot as the sun that finally
came out through the clouds. On Friday around dusk, we received a call about a
Colobus that was hurt, crawling on the ground with its troop nervously encircling
it in the nearby trees.
"At
the beginning of May I had a little jaunt around South Africa and needless to
say I had a great time! What follows is a brief little summary of my time there
(I say brief, as if I had the time I could easily write pages as each project
was that much fun and I experienced so much).." Read
