The
rehabilitation centre at Shamwari has taken two orphans under their wing;
a baby elephant and giraffe. The elephant was taken over from Sanbona Wildlife
Reserve after his mother tragically died and is being looked after by the conservation
team. The students are also helping look after this addition to the Shamwari family,
with some of the volunteers staying overnight with him. Baby elephants need constant
love and attention, so the students staying overnight with him helps to keep this
little orphan company.
The baby giraffe is also being looked after by the
conservation team in the same centre. He was taken in after his mother abandoned
him after he was born and is being looked after. When he is old enough there
are high hopes that he will hopefully be released.
