Willing Workers in South Africa

Willing Workers in South Africa

Do you want to assist or work alongside teachers in underprivileged communities abroad? If you’re looking for a short term position, teaching abroad, this could be the placement for you. You don’t need any qualifications or experience to participate in these placements; just passion and enthusiasm.

WWISA (Willing workers in South Africa) is a community-focused organisation that aims to harness the energies of the international volunteer movement to support the development of independent and sustainable projects that respond to the identified needs of under-privileged communities, assisting them in the enhancement of existing  skills and the acquisition of new expertise to sustain and further such projects, thereby promoting the development of fully fledged, well-informed, productive  citizens in democratic South Africa.

This community placement  offers volunteers a unique opportunity to experience the colour and benefits of  African life and learn from locals and other volunteers alike. Unlike the majority  of volunteer organisations, WWISA is based in the country you volunteer in, providing  vital on-site support and guidance that is tailored to the specific issues of life in South Africa.

It also means we have a direct involvement with  you throughout your stay and, with WWISA forming a key part of the local community, we have close contacts with other local businesses and organisations in the area,  allowing us to provide you with excellent opportunities and discounts on many  local attractions – including Ocean Safaris, Monkeyland and the worlds highest  bungee jump at Bloukrans Bridge

Situated around 22km from Plettenberg Bay and around 550km from Cape Town in South Africa. Based in this rural area, the property is surrounded by farmland, with a clear view of the Tsitsikamma Mountain Range.

Kurland Village is a former township based around 4km from Rocky Road in The Crags, which is approximately 10km from Nature’s Valley and 16km east of Plettenberg Bay. The Crags is on the N2 Garden Route which runs from Mossel Bay, East to Port Elizabeth. It is about 500km East of Cape Town.

Your accommodation for the duration of your stay will be at Rocky Road HQ. Set in a  quiet, indigenous garden, surrounded by forests, Rocky Road offers a homely environment  from which to explore the Tsisikamma Mountains. The house has four bedrooms, all  of which generally sleep up to three.

There are also a number of luxury tents in the garden for the more adventurous or those who are seeking a little more privacy and a little more contact with nature. The tents are large enough  to comfortably accommodate two people and there are small cupboards and shelves to help you keep your belongings organised.

You will be involved with between 15-20 hours a week teaching English, and before you know it, you might be taking the class on your own. These children, aged between 7 & 15, are in desperate need of personal assistance in their primary and tertiary education development, so you will be making a positive difference to the development of this community.

Your teaching project at Kurland will see you heavily involved with all aspects of community programmes. The time spent teaching is obviously limited to the school and creche opening hours and some days will be spent getting involved in various other projects.

The school where you will be assisting is a short-staffed school within the Kurland Community which caters for approximately 570 scholars aged 7 – 14, the school has a high student/teacher ratio with some classes of  up to 40 scholars.

Extra mural and sporting activities always benefit from additional input. English is taught to all the children from an early age and so the majority of children can at least understand English, if not speak  the language fluently.

Teaching English as a second language to  improve literacy amongst the broader community is always in need of ongoing support.  Adult and youth groups make use of this input.

You can also spend time  at the Crags School every afternoon coaching and playing sport with the school  children. Worldwide Experience and our volunteers make every effort to uplift  the community so a portion of the funds raised goes to purchasing sports equipment,  clothing and maintaining the fields. You will be involved with between 15-20  hours a week teaching English, and before you know it, you might be taking the  class on your own.
