Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Itinerary covering 4 day trek and social interaction.

This itinerary has been compiled to comply with the criteria set for Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award participants.

This two week intensive project covers two main areas of the award namely residential and expedition aspects of the award. The project has been certified by the Duke of Edinburgh Award and is available to all participants of the Gold award.


About your challenge
Your challenge will be a truly life changing experience allowing you the opportunity to have a first hand insight into the conservation efforts and drives at some of the leading Game Reserves and Bush Survival farms in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Be prepared to get hands on in all aspects of conservation as you will be introduced to a whole range of activities and interesting people who's vision it is to make these amazing conservation initiatives work. You will also be introduced to the local communities in the area where you will share cultural interchanges with old and young alike. This challenge will count towards the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award, you will embark on a 4 day unassisted trek and also participate in social activities in Port Alfred township. Where you will work with impoverished families and schools.

Your students will be assessed by the rangers for their DofE trek and social community work. This is the perfect opportunity to get students to complete the highly respected award in a country they may never get the chance to see again, a real once in a lifetime trip!

Principal Partners

SHAMWARI GAME RESERVE
20,000 Hectare (45,000 Acres) wildlife reserve in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. This reserve is scenically beautiful with diverse vegetation. This "BIG 5" reserve also boasts an award winning conservation team with whom you will assist.

ESINGENI PREDATOR FREE GAME FARM

Tented accommodation set less than a mile from the Madolos Lodge at Shamwari, fantastic landscape for exploration and activities in a non big five environment
BORN FREE FOUNDATION
Shamwari Game Reserve proudly have 2 Born Free Foundation Big Cat sanctuaries located on the reserve. These centre house rescued big cats from all over the world.
You will spend a portion of your time at the centre learning the interesting stories behind these animals amazing journeys.

EISS CAMPUS
EISS is a highly respected university facility in Port Alfred, home to Dutch and African students. You will be staying with the students for part of your challenge and assisting them in all their community projects; anything from business development to bead workshops. EISS is based on the picturesque coast line near Kenton On Sea.

Location
The setting for your Eco School Challenge will be the malaria free Eastern Cape of South Africa. This area of South Africa, historically, held one of Africa's highest concentration of Game. Tragically, the early settlers shot out these species that once roamed the area, some 200 years ago. It is now the drive and vision of many people to reintroduce these once native species back to the land. This is your opportunity to join this drive.



Accommodation
Esingeni Tented Camp situated less than a mile from the Shamwari gates. Esingeni allows for a real bush experience in tented accommodation. You will also be staying in Port Alfred at EISS Campus for social element of your challenge. All transfers are conducted by AVIS South Africa and are in comfortable vehicles suitable to the groups size. Our programmes operate fully licensed Homologated vehicles for game viewing and conservation activities



Project Duration and Course Length

Depart London Heathrow; Land in Jonesburg where you get your internal flight to Port Elizabeth. You will be transferred from the airport to the reserve;
14 Day Experience on Reserve; Depart Port Elizabeth, land Johannesburg and then connect to London Heathrow.

Conservation Project

Day 1

Transfer from PE airport to Esingeni Accommodationorientation
Tea and Coffees
Briefing for safety, fire drill, indemnity, house rules and regulations.
Orientation of facilities and surrounds
Dinner - 18:30 Traditional Potjie around open fire.

Day 2
Continental breakfast served at 07:00
Game drive on Shamwari and Born Free South (depending on availability of Shamwari)
Lunch served in the bush at 13:00
Lecture and talk on Conservation Medicine and various aspects of veterinary work in the
African bushveld.
Dinner at 18:30

Day 3
Cooked Breakfast served at 07:30
Pre-trail preparatory hike on Willow Fountain Game
Reserve all day including a visit to ancient
Bushman Rock Paintings (hike from Esingeni to Willows and back)
Lunch will be served in the bush.
Afternoon on reserve activities
Dinner will be served at 18:30
Social time to utilise activities at accommodation.

Residential Project

Day 4

Transfer to EISS campus-pick up at turnoff to Esingeni on Alicedale road 9 am (at EISS for 4 days. leaving EISS at 2 pm arriving 2.30 pm at Esingeni)

Group 1: Feeding project in Township.
Group 2: Activity Centre [Township].
Group 3: Computer Skills Training in Bathurst

Day 5
Group 1 Pack relief parcels at Child Welfare.
Group 2: Activity Centre.
Group 3: Computer Skills [Bathurst].

Day 6
Group 1: Literacy Programme {Child Welfare Project]/ Alternatively Feeding Project.
Group 2: Activity Centre.
Group 3: Computer Skills Training.

Day 7
Group 1: Pack relief parcels.
Group 2: Activity Centre.
Group 3: Computer skills training.

Day 8
Programme ends by lunch time and group has lunch at EISS
Group 1: Pack relief parcels.

Prep/practice for expedition

Expedition Project

Day 9
Theme for the day: Forest Conservation: The trail follows the Highlands ridge with Afro-montane forests. We will navigate through the forests and look at various issues concerning forest threats and conservation. We will also learn to identify the various large mammals we see on route and study their tracks, dung and signs. Local farmer to talk to the students around the campfire that night about changing land use practices and conservation. Reach camp site 4.30 pm to set up camp, collect water and prepare food before nightfall. Discuss the days events over dinner and plan for following day. Check individual supplies, concerns, aches and pains so as to call in backup staff/supplies before sunrise.

Day 10
Theme: Bush Survival techniques. Making fire with sticks, camp craft (security and shelter), finding water, making distress signals, identifying medicinal and food plants. Hike up over the highlands ridge aiming for stone kraals on top
Wake up 6.30 am, leave from camp at 7.30am latest. 7.15am and over breakfast discuss route and days activities, deciding on who will lead at different stages of the day.

Day 11
Theme: The impact of animals and humans on the landscape. We will observe and reflect on the changing landscape practices (conservation vs. agriculture) in the area.
Wake up 6.30 am, leave from camp at 7.30am latest. 7.15am and over breakfast discuss route and days
activities.

Day 12
Theme: Leadership and group cooperation-what have we learnt as individuals from the expedition? Have our guiding, orientation and decision making skills improved? Reaching our final destination or personal goals.

Day 13
Theme: Leadership and group cooperation-what have we learnt as individuals from the expedition? Have our guiding, orientation and decision making skills improved? Reaching our final destination or personal goals.

Day 14
Debrief Trail. Student presentations.
Cultural heritage and 1820 settler history of South Africa incl. reptile conservation and display (guest speaker-Basil Mills).
Transfer to PE airport


CONSERVATION ACTIVITIES

Conservation activity suggestions may be variable according to the circumstance on the reserve, i.e. due to weather or sudden emergency, thus this is not a fixed itinerary. I have included no direct veterinary practice as the day and type of work is not pre-determined.

  • Predator, mammal identification using ear notching, body markings
  • Animal tracking, wild dogs, leopard and lion
  • Searching for injured animals, newly born young
  • Observation and participation in veterinary work, darting of predators and mammals
  • Veterinary situation analysis with Veterinary surgeon
  • Lectures with Veterinary surgeons
  • Visit by Mr Mills- interaction with reptiles at Madolos, historical class.
  • Reed planting
  • Educational trails through predator free reserve
  • Visiting African bushman paintings
  • Star gazing and night drives
  • Education of flora/fauna- medicinal usage
  • Visiting and assisting at the Born Free Big Cat Sanctuary
  • Feeding resident lion. Leopard, cheetah

COMMUNITY CHALLENGES
Trips to the community are optional for this program though has been included on your itinerary.

Community visits enable students to interact with children of other cultures, learn how they live and develop and understanding and appreciation for the African way of life in comparison to their own.
