Join one of our most rewarding experiences and help coach various sports to children and local teams in rural South Africa.

As a developing country, South Africa has very limited resources available in terms of sporting facilities and qualified coaches. As the buzz surrounding forthcoming major sporting events intensifies there is an even greater need for sports coaching assistants to help build and harness the skills of young children in the townships of rural South Africa.


Whilst on your sports coaching project you may be involved in the following:

Sports coaching
- Working on the skills required for sport

  • Schools Coaching - Going into local schools and delivering a planned and structures session with to encourage positive outcomes for the class.
  • Local Team Coaching - working with the local community leaders and delivering planned and structured coaching session for local sports teams, working with local coaches to help develop and harness skills.

Fitness coaching - Working on the fitness of players, giving them the tools to improve their players health and abilities through structured fitness and exercise programmes.

Competitions - linked to skills which have been coached i.e.

  • Penalty shootouts
    American Shootout
    Football Skittles
    3 or 5 aside games linked to World Cup, Champions League

Kids Sports Initiative - Trying to get children interested from an early age and implement through fun and Games

  • Orphanages
  • Pre schools
  • Primary schools

Community Projects - sustainable projects within the community

  • Refurbishment of club house
  • Pitch clean ups
  • Community rallying and sponsored events - getting the local community to support teams and initiatives

Our brand new sports coaching project works within one of South Africa's many rural townships and allows you to directly contribute to the development of sport within the community. All levels of experience are welcome and you will work along side our coaching team on the ground.
The vision behind the project is to create a sustainable sports coaching academy that will run year round and allow all ages and skill levels from the area to benefit from international sports coaching.

Location
The Port Alfred Sports Coaching Project is based in the town of Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, only an hour drive from Port Elizabeth. The Eastern Cape is justifiably famous for number of world renowned game reserves. Port Alfred is the perfect location for our sports programme and allows you access to a number of sports teams within the area whilst also allowing you to enjoy the laid back social life that the town is famous for.

Accommodation
Sports coaches are accommodated at a local guest house that is located a few minutes from the main university campus, which acts as the main hub for the sports coaching programmes. Volunteers will be based in shared room arrangements with single gender shower/toilet facilities. Meals are served at the local campus with some evening meals being covered at one of the many local restaurants.

Time off
The working week whilst on the project is Monday to Friday between 08h00 and 16h00 depending on the days activities. Evening and weekends are spent at leisure. During the evenings volunteers can relax at the accommodation or take advantage of one of the many local bars and restaurants. During weekends you can explore some of the surrounding attractions. Popular choices include Storms River Bungee Jump or surfing at Jeffrey's Bay.
